Booster Shots: Oddities, Musings and News from the Health World
May 25, 2011 | By Thomas H. Maugh II, Los Angeles Times / For the Booster Shots blog
Women who reported not taking prenatal vitamins immediately before and during a pregnancy were twice as likely to have a child with autism, UC Davis researchers reported Wednesday. If the women also had a mutation in a high-risk gene, they were seven times as likely to have a child with the development disorder, the researchers reported in the online edition of the journal Epidemiology. The study is scheduled to appear in print in July.

Why Dr. Bo's PreNatal?
If you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or recently gave birth, Dr. Bo's PreNatal vitamins, minerals and herbs are designed to improve your nutritional health. It is specially formulated to be easy on your system, while providing the added nutrients and DHA you need for a healthy pregnancy. It is an important part of pregnancy nutrition and should be used to supplement a healthy diet. With the right foods and Dr. Bo's PreNatal supplement, you'll get all of the nutrients you need for you and your baby.

The Nutrients You and Your Baby Need
  • Vitamins
Dr. Bo's PreNatal includes Vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, B10, B12, C, E, and K to counteract common deficiencies in pregnant women. It also includes folate as folic acid (B9), which has been shown to reduce the risk of neural tube defects in children. Adequate folate in healthful diets may reduce a woman's risk of having a child with a brain or spinal cord birth defect.
    • Vitamin A - Has been found to help with embryonic development and with infection resistance.
    • Vitamin B6 - In a study, Vitamin B6 has been found to reduce miscarriages and also increase the chance of conception. Vitamin B6 can also help with nausea.
    • Vitamin D3 - Helps with bone health and density. Reduces preeclampsia. Studies have also found Vitamin D3 to help with depression.
  • Calcium
Calcium citrate is another essential part of Dr. Bo's PreNatal. In addition to helping build strong bones, Calcium during pregnancy can prevent a new mother from losing her own bone density, as the fetus uses the mineral for bone growth. This unique form of calcium, along with Vitamin C (calcium ascorbate), has been shown to enhance iron absorption in comparison with other forms of calcium and is water-soluble, making it easier for the body to absorb. Additionally, it does not cause the gas or bloating common with some other calcium supplements.
  • Iron
To support the dramatic increase in iron requirements during pregnancy, Dr. Bo's PreNatal includes Iron Aid®. This patented form bypasses the gastric mucosa in the stomach and is rapidly absorbed in the duodenum in an alkaline or neutral pH environment. Most regular forms of iron severely irritate the stomach lining causing pain, heartburn, and constipation. However, this unique form of iron does not cause these negative side effects. Clinical study results of Iron protein succinylate show a 23% increase in percentage of red blood cells (hematocrit), 30% increase in oxygen carrying capacity of blood (hemoglobin) and 6% increase in total number of red blood cells and is generally well-tolerated. Iron in pregnant women helps carry oxygen to the fetus.
Herbal Benefits
  • Raspberry Extract
Traditional healers have long noted its healing properties. Today, it is a popular herbal treatment for pregnant women. Raspberry extract benefits pregnant women by alleviating nausea, preparing the womb for birth, and making labor go faster. This plant extract also has other benefits as a fighter against fever and diarrhea. Raspberry is rich in nutrients and offers a wealth of antioxidant protection. This gives the body the building blocks necessary for healthy joints and tissues. Raspberry Extract provides a great source of nutrition without affecting the body's blood sugar levels and gives the body a great source of crucial nutrients and minerals.

Rich in iron, this herb has been shown to help tone the uterus, increase milk production, decrease nausea, and ease labor pains. Some studies have even reported that using red raspberry leaf during pregnancy can reduce complications and the use of interventions during birth.¹
  • Ginger
It is the underground stem, or rhizome, of the plant Zingiber officinale and has been used as a medicine in Asian, Indian, and Arabic herbal traditions since ancient times. Ginger has been used historically to treat arthritis, abdominal bloating, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Ginger has been shown to be effective for relieving the severity of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy. Using it to quell morning sickness does not appear to raise the risk of birth defects.

A review of several studies concludes that ginger may be a safe and effective treatment for women suffering from the morning sickness of pregnancy, reports Obstetrics and Gynecology (2005;105:849-56).
  • Dandelion
Rich in Vitamin A, Calcium, and Iron; dandelion root and leaf can also help relieve mild edema and nourish the liver.
Enzyme Blend
It is a Peptizymes SP® (peptidase) and pancreatic blend of food grade multi-enzymes and synergistic co-factors to optimize digestion of fats, starches, carbohydrates, proteins (including gluten, casein and soy) and sugars (including lactose).

Ionic Trace Minerals and Electrolytes
This is a special blend of Ionic minerals and essential electrolytes your body needs to perform at optimum levels of energy, stamina and hydration during everyday life, competition or any other strenuous activity. In their ionic state, these high energy minerals and electrolytes are capable of generating and conducting the electrical impulses so vital to every function of the human body. Your body relies on these ingredients every second of every day. Without the impulses that ionic and trace minerals create, not a single muscle, including your heart and your brain would be able to function. Your cells would not be able to use osmosis to balance your water pressure and absorb nutrients. Proper hydration helps to reduce the incidence of cramps and muscle fatigue.

As medical knowledge of pregnancy continues to develop in leaps and bounds, more and more physicians and prenatal care specialists are suggesting that soon-to-be expecting mothers should begin a regimen of prenatal vitamins and DHA as soon as possible. But what makes supplements that contain DHA so special? The answer is fascinating!

The Buzz about Prenatal Vitamins with DHA
Developing fetuses are most vulnerable to harm at around two to eight weeks after conception - prenatal vitamins ensure that your body is ready to support the incredibly delicate formation of important tissues, so that your baby will be getting the nutrients he or she needs far before your pregnancy shows up on any tests.

DHA prenatal vitamins are special because developing fetuses need this omega-3 fatty acid to promote healthy brain and myelin development (myelin allows the brain to process information faster later inline).

DHA also helps foster eye development, and some studies have even shown a link between DHA and cold prevention in babies and moms.

Other Beneficial Ingredients
Dr. Bo's PreNatal also provides the benefits of zinc, copper, magnesium, L-Selenomethionine (selenium), manganese, chromium, potassium, inositol, choline, iodine, elemental boron and bioflavonoids and does not contain aspirin.
  • Choline - Recent studies have found choline to increase the size of brain cells and can make brain cells faster at firing electrical signals. The study showed that choline supplementation during pregnancy could affect a baby's lifelong learning and memory.
  • Inositol - In a study done at Washington School of Medicine, Inositol was found to help reduce the chance of neural tube defects. The study found that on top of Folic Acid Inositol helped to further reduce neural tube defects.
Supplements are important but they're only a small part of a very big picture.
Supplemental vitamins, minerals and herbs are designed to provide the extra nutrients that a growing baby requires and are not meant to completely satisfy the nutritional needs of the mother. Your careful attention to health and nutrition before, during, and after pregnancy will surely result in a better chance for a strong, healthy child.

Be sure to stay away from junk food, coffee, caffeinated products, carbonated products (this will just give you lots of gas an bloat you), sugar, alcohol, gluten, casein and fried foods. Try to consume fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and non-gluten grains according to your blood type and combine your foods correctly (see Books on this site for Dr. Bo's "Eat Smart Eat Simple" and "Guide to Smart Food Choices"). Also most of my pregnant clients love to take Garden of Plenty everyday as a shake for super nutrition for lots more essential supplements and multi-superfoods. In my opinion taking my PreNatal together with Garden of Plenty is the best possible nutrition and supplementation before, during and after pregnancy.
